Fine 19th and earlier 20th century dog and animal paintings
The William Secord Gallery specializes in fine nineteenth and twentieth century dog and animal paintings. A haven for the dog lover, it presents three exhibitions a year at its east side location, and it always has a large selection of paintings, drawings and original prints. Included are works by such 19th century luminaries as John Emms, Sir Edwin Landseer, and Arthur Wardle, but it also represents three living artists who have established a wide and distinguished audience for their realistic portraits of sporting dogs, purebreds and pets.
William Secord, who founded the gallery in 1990, is the world’s recognized expert on dog painting. The author of three lavishly illustrated books on the subject, he is consulted by museums curators and private collectors alike. Of his first book, currently in six editions, the New York philanthropist and art collector, Mrs. Vincent Astor, boldly states, “…for a dog lover, it is a must!”
This depth of knowledge is reflected in all the gallery’s exhibitions, and it has presented landmark shows of both English and American artists. Included among these have been one-person exhibitions of the nineteenth century British artists R. Ward Binks, Maud Earl, John Emms and Arthur Wardle, as well exhibitions by the contemporary artists Christine Merrill, Constance Payne, and Charlotte Sorre. William Secord Gallery is THE source for dog and animal paintings.
